Tokaji Eszencia 2010 (Half Bottle)

There are sweet wines… and then there is Eszencia. The 2010 vintage stands as one of Tokaj’s most revered modern releases — born from free-run juice of individually shrivelled, botrytised berries. This is not simply wine; it is liquid essence, measured in drops rather than pours.

Appearance

Deep, lustrous amber with burnished copper and mahogany hues. Almost syrup-like in viscosity, it moves with extraordinary density in the glass, forming thick, slow arches that speak of immense natural sugar concentration.

Aroma

Profoundly complex and endlessly layered. Aromas of dried apricot, quince paste and Seville orange marmalade rise first, followed by acacia honey, dates and fig compote. Noble rot character brings saffron, ginger and delicate tea leaf nuances. There are whispers of beeswax, caramelised pineapple and candied citrus peel, underpinned by a subtle volcanic minerality that keeps the bouquet lifted rather than heavy.

Palate

Extraordinarily sweet yet astonishingly vibrant. The texture is unctuous and velvety, coating every corner of the palate with flavours of apricot preserve, mango nectar, honeycomb and candied orange. Despite the immense residual sugar, piercing acidity provides clarity and balance — the defining hallmark of great Tokaj. The finish is almost endless, evolving through layers of spice, citrus zest and mineral freshness. Alcohol remains low, allowing purity and intensity to shine without weight.

Food Pairing

Eszencia transcends traditional pairing — it is often best enjoyed alone, slowly, as a meditative experience. However, it pairs beautifully with:

  • Foie gras on toasted brioche

  • Mature blue cheeses such as Stilton

  • Apricot or almond tart

  • A simple aged Comté

Serve lightly chilled in small glasses and allow it time to open. A half bottle offers many contemplative moments.

A rare and extraordinary expression of Tokaj — concentrated, timeless and utterly captivating.
