Pinot Grigio is a white wine grape that’s actually a pale-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir, sharing its parent’s ability to adapt to different terroirs. In Italy, Alto Adige produces some of the country’s finest Pinot Grigio: crisp, dry white wines with bright acidity and alpine minerality.
When grown in warmer areas like Friuli or Veneto, it can be rounder, with riper orchard fruit notes.
South African Pinot Grigio is a newer player, often vibrant, zesty and fruit-forward, with a sunny ripeness and refreshing finish.
The grape itself is naturally full-bodied for a white, able to deliver texture and weight when yields are kept low.
Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape but express two distinct styles:
“Grigio” is the Italian style — light, crisp, dry, and meant for easy drinking.
“Gris,” the French/Alsatian take, tends to be richer, spicier, and more full-bodied, often with a touch of residual sweetness.
Globally, Pinot Grigio thrives in cool climates: Northern Italy, Oregon, Alsace, and emerging regions like New Zealand and South Africa.
Expect flavours of pear, apple, citrus, and sometimes a hint of almond or white flowers.
Well-made Pinot Grigio is a dry white wine that balances freshness with a satisfying weight on the palate. At its best, it’s a versatile white that pairs easily with seafood, salads, and sunshine
